Texas Defensive Driving Written Practice Test 2026 - Free Defensive Driving Practice Questions and Study Guide

When you encounter a stop sign while driving, the appropriate action is to slow down and prepare to stop. The purpose of a stop sign is to ensure that drivers come to a complete halt at an intersection and assess the situation before proceeding. This action helps to prevent accidents by allowing you to check for other vehicles, pedestrians, and potential hazards in the area.

Slowing down indicates that you are approaching the intersection cautiously and are ready to make a safe decision about whether to continue through the intersection. This approach promotes awareness of your surroundings, which is fundamental to defensive driving. It is essential to come to a full stop, as California law requires and emphasizes safety by ensuring that you take adequate time to observe traffic conditions.

Failing to stop, even if the road appears clear, or only stopping when other cars are present undermines the purpose of the stop sign and creates a risk of accidents. Ignoring the stop sign altogether can lead to serious consequences, including legal penalties and increased risk of collisions, especially if other road users are present and unaware of your intentions. Therefore, the best practice is to slow down, prepare to stop, and only proceed when it is safe to do so.
